Personal development is a good thing to focus your time and energy on. By improving yourself as a person you’ll see improvements in every area of your life – your work, your family, and your fun!

It may be helpful to you to start your personal development journey by taking a look at where you’ve come from. How did you get to where you are today, and what helped make your into the person that you are? Are there people and situations that formed you?

It’s ok if there are bad memories and negative experiences. Now is a good time to think through them and think of how they effected you. Once you’ve looked at them as you remember them, it’s time to look at them objectively. Think about situations that may have been hard for you, and realize that even if something bad happened to you, you’re still in control of your life. You’re in control of what you do – and you’re in control of how you feel.

There may be situations in your past when you thought someone was angry at you, or was hurting you. Often we develop beliefs about ourselves based on how we see the behavior of others. We may think that because our parents yelled at us, we’re “not good enough.” In reality, our parents were probably just frustrated because we forgot to take out the trash for the thirtieth time.

When you look at situations like this objectively, you can let go and move past them. Sometimes it’s hard to look at hurtful situations objectively, but you can still work through your memories and decide to let go… and move on with your life.

Focus on doing things that you enjoy. Finding things to do that bring you joy, even just small things, will really begin to improve your outlook. Help other people and do things to help them. You’ll be surprised just how good this makes you feel.

Relaxation and meditation may be helpful for you. Even if you don’t want to follow a specific program or methodology, you can take the time to relax every day. A short nap, a hot bath, or a good book are all good ways to relax.

Some people find they learn a lot about themselves when they start journaling. Writing down what happens in their life, their thoughts, and their memories is very empowering. You can journal with a pen and paper, or you can use one of many applications available on your computer.

A hallmark of personal development is figuring out just what you want in life. Take that journal and your thoughts and reflections on your life and think about what you’d like to get out of the future. What kind of a life do you want? What do you want to accomplish? What kind of a paycheck do you want your life to hand you? Think about these things and write them down. There’s something powerful about writing your goals down.

Once you’ve written your goals down, start working towards them right away. Don’t worry if you don’t know exactly how things are going to happen. The important thing is that you start working towards your goals. You’ll be amazed at the opportunities that open up and the ideas that come to you to help you towards your goals.

If you set a date for your goals you’ll be able to measure your progress. Don’t worry if things happen in fits and spurts – just keep working. If the date of your goals passes, don’t give up… just move the date! Keep working on your goals. “Fail forward… Fast” should be your motto. Don’t give up.

Sometimes you’ll need to revise goals and plans and actions. That’s fine and it’s part of learning and growing. Don’t give up on yourself and your goals, however.

Keep learning about personal development. Ask people you admire how they achieved their success. Read personal development books. Fill your commute time with audios from success speakers. Keep a positive attitude and keep working and exploring yourself. You’ll find you grow and as you do, your life will become rich and happy.

    Roger Loh asked:

Personal development – also commonly called self-improvement – is a booming industry! And Internet-based personal development – also commonly called e-learning – is now becoming increasingly popular.

According to market research and statistics, it is a 64 billion dollar industry worldwide. In the US alone, an estimated 9.6 billion dollars is invested in personal development in 2005 in the form of:

    - books

    - motivational speakers

    - personal coaching

    - weight loss programs

    - audio tapes

    - stress management programs

It is also projected that this industry will grow at the rate of 11.4 percent yearly and reach 13.9 billion dollars in 2010.

People are now turning to gurus for help in various areas as above. For example, Robert Kiyosaki’s ‘Rich Dad, Poor Dad’ had been on the New York Times bestseller list for several years in a row and sold 20 million copies!

Likewise, Stephen R. Covey’s ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ sold more than 15 million copies in 38 languages around the world!

In a similar manner, many people are spending thousands of dollars attending personal development seminars every year conducted by well-known industry gurus like Tony Robbins, Zig Ziglar, Jim Rohn, T. Harv Eker and others.

Along with this mega trend, Internet-based personal development websites, typically membership sites, are becoming more popular as people can learn through audio and visual programs from the comfort of their homes. One well-known example is Success University, which became the No. 1 personal development website on the Internet, within months of launching three years ago.

Essentially, people are beginning to realize that a life time is too short for one to learn from their mistakes and it is actually smarter and faster to learn from successful people who have done what you want to achieve through reading their books, listening to their tapes and watching their DVDs, attending their live seminars or even engaging them as coaches or mentors.

    Alex Blackwell asked:

To keep moving forward in life, we all need solid footing underneath us for a starting point. I attended a spiritual formation and personal effectiveness seminar a few years ago (and have since returned to be a trainer at this seminar). These seven strategies provide this firm foundation for a starting point. The following is a quick overview of these strategies:

Strategy One: Keep Your Balance. This strategy will remind you how important a balanced life really is. Keeping your life in balance provides you the ability to see a world full of possibilities for yourself. But, when you are knocked off balance, it’s your personal responsibility, your choice, to get back on track or not.

Strategy Two: Change Your Point of View. The way you look at your life is called your Point of View. You tend to look at life through a prescribed set of lens you acquired at a very age, which may keep you from experiencing the world in the way it actually exists. A Common Point of View is characterized by logical and rational interpretations. The challenge is to shift to an Uncommon Point of View. This will allow you to step back and ask if what you are experiencing is effective and working for you in your life.

Strategy Three: Move Outside of Your Comfort Zone. True growth happens on the other side of your comfort zone. Fear fills the gap between your comfort zone and growth. Taking the first step and walking through the fear is a fundamental step to creating the life you want.

Strategy Four: Erase the old tapes playing in your head. The central message found on these old tapes playing in your head is based on the “lie.” The “lie” tells you are not enough and that you can’t do or have what you want. Replacing the “lie” with the truth is the mechanism to erase these old tapes. The truth tells you that you are indeed enough. The key is to become a person of choice and choose the truth, not the lie.

Strategy Five: Leave your bag of garbage at the garbage pit. The garbage we carry with us is as heavy to our hearts and souls as any physical weight. Oftentimes it’s difficult to throw out this garbage because it has shaped and defined us for far too long. To begin the process of throwing out your garbage, you must first name it and begin to realize what it’s costing you. Perhaps you may feel a void in your life with the trash gone. Fill this space with blessings and grace for yourself and others.

Strategy Six: Recognize Triggers and Spins. A trigger is cause by a specific stimulus that is usually associated with a bad memory or experience. Spins are the catastrophic misinterpretations that follow. To stop the spinning, you need to “lift the lid” and confront the memories by sorting the past from the present.

Strategy Seven: Putting it all together: Accountability steps for creating the life you want! Before you step forward, it’s also important you don’t analyze where you have been in the past, or even analyze where you might be going. To live and to experience the moment, the here-and-now, can be challenging. But it’s essential you tune into your feelings and you sit with those feelings to get a realistic handle on what it is that you really do want to have.

Here’s the road map: The first four phases are, perhaps, places where you have lived for far too long and places that have contributed to you being “stuck” and unable to make the choices that will help you in creating the life you want. The last four phases are some of the primary tools for building the quality of life you deserve and creates the road map to see the choices available to you:

    1. Unaware or Unconscious
    2. Blame Others or Blame God
    3. “I Can’t” Excuses
    4. Wait & Hope
    BREAKTHROUGH
    5. Acknowledge Reality
    6. “Own My Part” and Release Others
    7. Become Accountable
    8. Create What You Want!

However, don’t be discouraged by the areas in your life that have caused you to be stuck. There are no accidents without value. In other words, looking for the value of what has happened to you, even it has been dysfunctional, is part of creating the life you want. To further illustrate this point, there are three basic rules of dysfunction:

    1. Don’t acknowledge: “I am not going to talk about the fact my mother is a alcoholic,” or “I got even think about telling any one about the abuse I have suffered – it really wasn’t that bad.”
    2. Don’t feel: “It may hurt too much to feel love for someone, what if that person stops loving me back?” It’s safer not to feel.”
    3. Don’t trust: “I have been let down too many times. At the end of the day, I can only trust myself any way.”

If you don’t look at the costs of the dysfunction then it will keep perpetuating. Behind this dysfunction are experiences from the past. As a result, fear is driving your bus, not your choices. Fear destroys intimacy and acquiring better tools is a part of your accountability.

    Liam McCauley asked:

While it may seem that a person’s attitude and their personal development goals and achievements are very different things, for most people they are actually strongly influenced by one another. Without the right mental attitude, achieving anything is an uphill battle that is more difficult than it has to be.

Changing a mental attitude for the better is something that can affect all aspects of a person’s life. It can allow one to feel in control of life and give a person the self esteem to make the changes desired.

    Improving Your Attitude

If personal development begins with changing a mental attitude, attitude changing begins by believing that it can be changed. Many people accept a negative attitude as being a normal part of their lives instead of a choice that has been made. It is vital to successfully meeting personal development goals to make the choice to have a positive attitude.

With a positive mental attitude, just about anything is possible. Each day the decision can be made to see everything positively, even if the day doesn’t go quite as planned. Looking at everything through this outlook makes experiences better and the future seem brighter.

Once the decision is made to see things positively and to carry a mental attitude that reflects that, throughout the day, goals that may have seemed far-fetched before will seem reachable. This means better success in achieving goals and a happier outlook on life.

    Self Improvement

Part of achieving any goal is to believe that you can achieve it. Using self affirmations that help to reinforce positive ideas can help you to have a more positive attitude. This, then, makes goal setting easier. Keep telling yourself that you are able to meet these goals with your own skills and talents.

With goals in mind, it is possible to take positive action toward self improvement. Setting short-term and long-term goals can help along the way, providing plenty of milestones to meet in order to build self confidence.

Self confidence is essential in the business world, but that confidence doesn’t always come from the business world. Sometimes, self confidence is dependent on very personal criteria. It may be a weight loss goal, a personal skill-set goal or another personal achievement that can give you the confidence to make achievements in business.

    Staying Motivated

With confidence and a good attitude comes motivation. Seeing the end goal and believing that it can be met is a great motivator to get things done. To continue to stay on track, continue setting goals after the first goals are met. They may be small things to accomplish, but they are milestones that can be met and conquered for your own self esteem and personal development.

    Larry Strawson asked:

Every choice you have ever made and every decision that you have regretted comes back to a set of several core beliefs that many people refer to as their personal values. Your values weren’t developed overnight and although outside influence plays a major role much of your values were determined by your own internal perception. Over your lifetime you have seen, heard, felt, and experienced certain situations and conditions that have helped shape your beliefs to what they are today. Your values are the foundation to your entire being and are subconsciously a part of your everyday life in one way or another.

Generally most people do not purposely choose their values, most of them are learned subconsciously as children before the age of 10. Studies have shown that a child’s social surroundings are the heaviest source of influence when it comes to developing personal values. Children tend to learn most of their behavior from their parents and older siblings, but as they get older they may be influenced by their teachers, coaches, friends, and even favorite actors or sports stars. All of these social interactions can have both a negative or positive influence over the development of our personal values.

Another key influence in personal values comes from our life experience, as we go through life we are able to take all of our positive and negative experiences and add them or discard them from our current belief system. Not only do your values influence your choices but as you grow older your choices will influence your values. Research has also shown that our values can change by the people we surround ourselves with through the process of association. For example during an independent study a German psychologist found out that he could eliminate a person’s fear of flying by simply having the patients sit down and talk with a professional pilot for 1 hour per week for several months.

By placing attention to your values you are able to become more self aware, make ethical decisions, and prioritize the things that really matter to you. When you are more self aware you will know exactly what you’re projecting to people when you interact with them, you will know exactly what you have done right and what you have done wrong in all aspects of your life. Understanding your own code of ethics and prioritizing your life will allow you live to your fullest potential, when you are able to proudly look yourself in the mirror you will have achieved what many like to call the height of empowerment.

Sometimes people may feel the need to change their current set of values, although this isn’t an overnight process it can be done with hard work and dedication. Since your personal values are a reflection of your life experiences the key to changing them is to change your life so that you have new experiences. By sitting down and consciously choosing which old values need to be removed, which values need to be retained, and which values need to be added you will be able to subconsciously command your brain to reprogram itself for change.

    Susan Velez asked:

Why not sit down for at least 10 minutes today and create a 5 year personal development plan for yourself. Where would you like to be in five years? What do you want to have accomplished? Visualize yourself as successful and write down your passions of what it is you want to be do have in your life. Remember you can do anything the only limitations we have are the one’s we place on ourselves. Most people realize that personal development is a positive step in the right direction of improving one’s life in any area of your life. However many people do not take control of their lives and have no idea of what they would like to accomplish in the next five years.

A 5 year personal development plant will help you map out areas in your life that you would like to improve. What is it right now that you would like to change in any area whether it is a relationship, business, career. Are you stagnant in any of those areas and would like to see yourself somewhere different? You can sit down and make some long term goals of where you would like to be in five years. Your 5 year personal development plan will help you identify the the means to accomplish your long term goals. It will be like a map that you can keep in front of you at all times to constantly remind you of what you want to be do have, and will be a map for you to follow. It will map the steps you make along the way and you can evaluate the progress that you make.

Another thing that will help you keep track of your progress is a journal. When you take the time to set the goals you would like to achieve whether long term or short term; you should write down your progress in your journal. This will help you keep on track and stay motivated towards working towards what it is you desire. Plus when you reach your goals you can go back and read what it took you to reach your goals. You should always rewards yourself positively for sticking to your 5 year personal development plan and doing whatever it takes to reach them.

However when you reward yourself make sure your reward is not negative. If your goal is to lose weight and you have dropped the amount of weight you wanted to, do not sit down and eat a big piece of chocolate cake. This would hurt you in the long run; instead do something else that you would enjoy doing like going to a movie.

If you currently know what you would like to be do have in five years down the road, and have your goals written down then you are way ahead of the game. Most people do not know what they want to be do have and most of them are just content with their mediocre life. The complain about their life however they really do not know what they want to accomplish; if you do not know where you would like to be chances are you will not ever accomplish anything different.

    Jonathan Wells asked:

Questions have the ability to change our focus in an instant. Asking the right questions is an advanced life skill that can literally change your mindset from limiting to empowering. Our personal view of reality hinges on what we focus our minds on. Questions not only provide our minds with focus but with incentive and direction as well.

As soon as we ask a question, our mind immediately begins searching for the answer. If we don’t like the answers that we are getting, it probably has a lot to do with the questions we are asking. By asking the right questions we can empower ourselves to change any aspect of our life.

So what are the right questions?

Questions that cause us to focus on possibilities and solutions are the ones that empower us. By training ourselves to consciously ask empowering questions, regardless of our circumstances, we will direct our minds to continually focus on new possibilities and solutions. This is exactly the kind of focus that enhances our personal growth and development.

As human beings we can only focus on a limited number of things at any given time. We can use this fact to our advantage, because when we focus on empowering things it becomes literally impossible to focus on limiting things at the same time. This means that when we focus on something positive, really focus on it, our minds will delete or block out negative thoughts.

Because questions have the ability to change our focus, we can automatically change our feelings as wells. When you ask yourself, “what do I feel really great about right now?” Your mind becomes occupied with answering that question; it simply cannot search for reasons to feel lousy at the same time.

Being truly focused, involves more than just our mental acuity, it also involves our emotions. This is especially true because the questions we are asking ourselves often have to do with how we feel about something. Emotions are the power plant of human motivation. We can use our minds to ask the questions that will harness that power, and focus it in the direction we want to go.

When problems arise in life, as they will, what questions can we ask ourselves to motivate us toward possibility and solution? Here are a few examples:

    1) How does this problem or challenge create a new opportunity? At first you may not see opportunity, so keep asking. This question is powerful because it is structured around the assumption that the problem has created an opportunity, now you just need to discover what it is. Your mind will acknowledge that assumption as a fact and before long it will present you with a list of opportunities.

    2) What action must I take to transform this situation? Notice the assumption built in to this question, there is a course of action that will transform the situation, all you need to do is find it.

    3) What aspect of this challenge is exciting? Again the assumption, there is something here to get excited about. We just asked our mind to figure out what that is, and so it will.

Notice what all of these questions have in common. They all have a built-in assumption that moves our focus in a positive direction. They all create a frame of mind that is empowering. Because we can focus in only one direction at a time, these questions also prevent us from exploring the negative aspects of our situation, both mentally and emotionally.

Remember, it’s not asking questions that creates results, it’s the answers. So as you answer each question take a moment to experience how that answer makes you feel. Developing a routine of asking yourself empowering questions will also increase your level of appreciation for the answers.

    With what result?

Being constantly aware and appreciative of our blessings can completely change our view of life.

When we talk about Personal Development several things come to mind. For some this can mean many different things. For instances some:

o To get a better job

o Make improvements in a relationship

o Learn how to set and keep goals.

o Learn how to manage their time and be efficient

    o Change their physical appearance

o Create a better financial platform

And the list can go on. Regardless of the reason most of us are looking for ways to improve our lives and be happier. However most of us don’t get what we want because we don’t know exactly what it is that we want. Most of us fail because we never begin. Most of us need to change the way we see ourselves. Some of us just need a little boost of confidence.

A good self image is a constant and continuous journey. All of us have quality personal assets. We are just unsure of what they are so they need to be discovered. Some of them us are unaware of how to use them. There are countless ways to achieve the discovery of those qualities.

Listening to audio messages, sometimes several times, is helpful and can prove to be quite educational. If you do not reinforce the information you receive, the chances are likely that you will not act upon it. Remember intending to do something does not mean it will ever get done. We must actively participate in the process of developing those qualities we have.

Another thing that can be done is to read books. There are a large number of books on the market for self help and self improvement. Personal development involves self growth as well. There is one book in particular that can give you a mountain of insight and help you to find lessons to achieve the success you desire in your personal development. This is just an incredible book with excerpts from some of the leading success speakers who share valuable information to help you on your road to improvements for your life. Your life is worth investing in so do what I did and take a step to a fuller and happier future.

    Liam McCauley asked:

People who are interested in developing themselves and creating goals know that how they feel about themselves is a big indicator of how positive they will be about achieving their personal development goals.

Keeping a positive attitude and believing that you can achieve your goals is an important part of actually following through and reaching a goal. Without a positive self image, it can be hard to believe that you can really make the improvements you need and to see the results that you want.

    Work on Your Attitude

If you have a hard time believing in yourself because of a poor self image, then it may be your attitude that needs to be improved before you can improve anything else. With a better attitude, the positive outlook you need in order to stick to goals and believe they can be reached is possible.

To change it, make personal development goals that are simply about your attitude. Try to get through an hour without a negative thought. Then, try to go a whole day without thinking poorly about yourself. If you can break the habit of a bad self image, you will be able to believe in yourself and what you are capable of.

Using Affirmations to Change Your Attitude

An affirmation is simply a declaration that something is true. This may sound simple, but it’s a powerful personal development tool for changing your attitude and learning to have a better self image. Using affirmations can help you to achieve a better mindset and self image over time.

To use affirmations, think of some phrases that would be useful things for you to understand and to believe. These phrases can be as simple as “I like myself,” or more complicated sentences that encompass how you want to see yourself. Practice saying these affirmations during certain times of the day. You might say them each morning and night or you may recite them during the daily commute. Some people choose to say them each time they go into the restroom so that the affirmations are repeated several times throughout the day.

Self Improvement Leads to Reaching Goals

With a better attitude about yourself, your attitude about achieving higher personal development and other goals will be much improved. Instead of having negative thoughts about really being able to stick to a diet, a budget or a work schedule, you will believe that you can do it. And by believing it, it becomes possible for you.

With a positive attitude and a belief in yourself, it will be possible to set many other types of goals. Because you believe in yourself, you can set high career and financial goals and expect that your hard work will lead to reaching those goals.
