Personal development is a good thing to focus your time and energy on. By improving yourself as a person you’ll see improvements in every area of your life – your work, your family, and your fun!

It may be helpful to you to start your personal development journey by taking a look at where you’ve come from. How did you get to where you are today, and what helped make your into the person that you are? Are there people and situations that formed you?

It’s ok if there are bad memories and negative experiences. Now is a good time to think through them and think of how they effected you. Once you’ve looked at them as you remember them, it’s time to look at them objectively. Think about situations that may have been hard for you, and realize that even if something bad happened to you, you’re still in control of your life. You’re in control of what you do – and you’re in control of how you feel.

There may be situations in your past when you thought someone was angry at you, or was hurting you. Often we develop beliefs about ourselves based on how we see the behavior of others. We may think that because our parents yelled at us, we’re “not good enough.” In reality, our parents were probably just frustrated because we forgot to take out the trash for the thirtieth time.

When you look at situations like this objectively, you can let go and move past them. Sometimes it’s hard to look at hurtful situations objectively, but you can still work through your memories and decide to let go… and move on with your life.

Focus on doing things that you enjoy. Finding things to do that bring you joy, even just small things, will really begin to improve your outlook. Help other people and do things to help them. You’ll be surprised just how good this makes you feel.

Relaxation and meditation may be helpful for you. Even if you don’t want to follow a specific program or methodology, you can take the time to relax every day. A short nap, a hot bath, or a good book are all good ways to relax.

Some people find they learn a lot about themselves when they start journaling. Writing down what happens in their life, their thoughts, and their memories is very empowering. You can journal with a pen and paper, or you can use one of many applications available on your computer.

A hallmark of personal development is figuring out just what you want in life. Take that journal and your thoughts and reflections on your life and think about what you’d like to get out of the future. What kind of a life do you want? What do you want to accomplish? What kind of a paycheck do you want your life to hand you? Think about these things and write them down. There’s something powerful about writing your goals down.

Once you’ve written your goals down, start working towards them right away. Don’t worry if you don’t know exactly how things are going to happen. The important thing is that you start working towards your goals. You’ll be amazed at the opportunities that open up and the ideas that come to you to help you towards your goals.

If you set a date for your goals you’ll be able to measure your progress. Don’t worry if things happen in fits and spurts – just keep working. If the date of your goals passes, don’t give up… just move the date! Keep working on your goals. “Fail forward… Fast” should be your motto. Don’t give up.

Sometimes you’ll need to revise goals and plans and actions. That’s fine and it’s part of learning and growing. Don’t give up on yourself and your goals, however.

Keep learning about personal development. Ask people you admire how they achieved their success. Read personal development books. Fill your commute time with audios from success speakers. Keep a positive attitude and keep working and exploring yourself. You’ll find you grow and as you do, your life will become rich and happy.
